Valentine’s Day: Love, History, and Different Traditions

Valentine’s Day, celebrated on February 14th, is one of the most well-known holidays dedicated to love and affection. But did you know that the way people celebrate it varies from country to country? In the United States, it’s a huge commercial event where couples exchange gifts, chocolates, flowers, and heartfelt cards. It’s also common for friends and even parents to celebrate with their children, making it a broader day of appreciation.

In Brazil, however, things are a little different! Instead of February 14th, we celebrate “Dia dos Namorados” (Lovers’ Day) on June 12th. The date was chosen for marketing reasons but became just as romantic as Valentine’s Day. While the U.S. focuses on love in general, in Brazil, the holiday is almost exclusively for couples—so if you’re single, there’s no Valentine’s treats from friends!
