Between Pumpkins and Whirlwinds: Halloween and Saci Day

Two Celebrations, One Day

October 31st is not just about pumpkins and ghosts — at least not in Brazil. While much of the world celebrates Halloween, Brazil honors one of its most iconic folklore characters: Saci-Pererê.
Both dates celebrate storytelling, imagination, and mystery. Halloween, with its Celtic roots, came from the ancient festival of Samhain, when people believed the line between the living and the dead grew thin. Over time, it evolved into a holiday full of costumes, candies, and scary tales.

Who Is Saci-Pererê?

Saci-Pererê is one of the most famous figures in Brazilian folklore . He is a mischievous, one-legged boy who wears a red hat and travels inside dust whirlwinds (redemoinhos). Known for playing tricks like hiding people’s belongings or making knots in horses’ manes, Saci is both funny and mysterious. His origins mix Indigenous, African, and Portuguese influences, showing how Brazil’s diverse cultures blend into one national mythology.

Legends That Teach Language

Just like Halloween stories, Brazilian folklore tales are full of lessons, rhythm, and cultural meaning. They are great for language learners because they combine narrative patterns, vocabulary, and expressive storytelling.
When students read legends like Saci-Pererê, Curupira, or Iara, they practice storytelling forms such as past tenses, sequencing words (then, after, suddenly), and descriptive language: all essential skills for fluency.

Language and Imagination

Both Halloween and the Day of Saci show how storytelling connects people around the world. While one uses ghosts and witches, and the other uses enchanted forests and magical beings, both traditions teach us about imagination — something every language learner needs.
In English, you can explore spooky idioms like “skeleton in the closet” or “a ghost town”, and in Portuguese, dive into playful folklore sayings. Language, in both cases, becomes a way to keep culture alive.

From Ghosts to Folklore: The Power of Storytelling

Whether it’s the eerie night of Halloween or the red whirlwind of Saci, both traditions remind us that stories are powerful tools for learning. They make us remember words, feelings, and history, and that’s exactly how learning English should feel: magical, mysterious, and full of discovery.
